Abstract: The contemporary socio-political processes indicate that the experience of communicative support for anti-government protests in the post-Soviet space with the help of cross-platform messengers has become increasingly significant in recent years. The purpose of this study is to consider the linguo-cognitive mechanisms of discrediting the authorities of Belarus and involving the population in anti-government protests through the Telegram messenger in 2020, based on the study of zoomorphic metaphors. The analysis has revealed four popular metaphorical projections in the discourse of the main oppositional channels NEXTA and NEXTA Live: AUTHORITIES are INSECTS, JOURNALISTS are MONGRELS, MILITIA are ANIMALS, and PEOPLE are ANIMALS. Zoomorphic metaphors serve as markers of crisis communication and radical intentions of the authors, who build up the opposition between the authorities (aliens) and the oppositionists (own), suggesting that the readers identify themselves with the “heroes” who help save the “victim” from the “villains”. For the sake of cognitive justification of this opposition, the tactics of dehumanizing the authorities by attributing zoomorphic features to them with the help of metaphors from the source domain “Animals” are used. In pragmatic terms, all zoomorphic projections are aimed at solving two concrete problems: delegitimization of the authorities (law enforcement agencies, the president of Belarus, and the journalists from state media) and engagement of the addressees in mass riots. Outside the context of these tasks, zoomorphic metaphors are not used in the discourse under analysis
