А именно, словосочетания «in light of recent events in Ukraine», «in light of Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine», «in light of Russia's violations», «giving Russia a green light» и «paint Trump in poor light» соотносятся с такими приемами оказания имплицитного воздействия на сознание читателя, как «эмоционализация», «внедрение моделей восприятия» и «навязывание пропозиций».

Abstract: The article examines the argumentative potential of metaphorical word combinations containing the lexeme “light”, that help exercise a hidden manipulative influence on political audience. The raised issues seem to be particularly urgent if one takes into account that the material of the study includes newspaper articles of the American media devoted to the topic of the complication of the US-RF relations, published over the period from 2014 to 2018. The main methods of analysis are the methods of contextual and cognitive-discursive analysis, which allow taking into account not only the linguistic, but also the extralinguistic component. As a result of the conducted research, it has been found that there is a certain correlation between the metaphorical word combinations containing the lexeme “light” and the methods of implicit influence on consciousness. Namely, the word combinations “in light of recent events in Ukraine”, “in light of Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine”, “in light of Russia's violations”, “giving Russia a green light” and “paint Trump in poor light” correlate with such techniques of implicitly influencing the reader's consciousness as “emotionalization”, “introducing perception models” and “imposing propositions”. At the same time, it is important to note that the mechanism of influence involving metaphorical combinations works not so much for the purpose of introducing the “desired” models of perception of reality, as in order to prepare the recipient's consciousness for a passive, uncritical and “correct” understanding of the political content from the point of view of the speaker
