Abstract: The paper analyzes the communicative function of the metaphor from three perspectives – esthetic, popularizing and imperative. The scope of research includes the French political discourse represented in newspaper sociopolitical texts. The object of research consists of metaphorical word usages extracted from such electronic periodicals as “Le Parisien”, “20 minutes.fr”, “Le Monde”, “Alimentation-generale.fr”, “Les Échos.fr”. While studying the metaphorical meanings of the lexical units under consideration the author of the article uses the method of contextual analysis, component analysis and the descriptive method. The aim of the study is to illustrate the role and significance of the metaphor in the language of the French political communication and to attract the readers’ attention to the communicative function of the metaphor in all its variations as a cognitive phenomenon of linguistic consciousness in the French political discourse. It is shown that the communicative function of the metaphor in the language of the French political communication is given a special role: the metaphor functions as a kind of information resource that allows translating information to the recipient in a clearer, more convenient and figurative form. In the French political discourse, the metaphor modifies the political model of the world via verbal structures and controls the consciousness of the French people in a certain form. The practical significance of the study consists in the possibility of inclusion of the examples of analysis of the metaphorical word usages in question in teaching and didactic materials while designing special courses in the language of the French political communication at the faculties of the humanities of higher education institutions, and specifically at the Faculty of World Politics of the Lomonosov Moscow State University for training students of such Master’s Degree programs as “International Relations”, “International Strategic Communication”, “Global Politics”, and “Information Support of State Interests”. The practical and theoretical material presented in the article can be also used in teaching language of politics and press and in lecturing within such discipline as “Linguistic Text Analysis”
