Abstract: The paper, based on the data from the electronic corpora, discusses the ways of categorization and metaphorization of such phenomena as terror and terrorism in modern English. The paper is concerned with a corpus-based method of investigating metaphorical mappings of terrorism through cryptotype profiling of the noun in COEL and metaphorical patters in NOW Corpus. The focus will be on how the data retrieved from linguistic information resources can contribute to our perception and understanding of terrorism. The uses of the words “terror” and “terrorism” are studied. The samples from the English language cover the period of 1800 to 2008, the frequency of the use of the word “terrorism” rises tremendously beginning with 1997. The language categorization of the notion is described on the basis of the author’s method of the study of metaphoronyms (non-subject names used metaphorically and categorized in the language on the analogy with the standard of the hidden nominal classes – cryptotypes) in twenty national variants of the English language. The most wide spread metaphors are analyzed: terrorism has a handle, it can be taken in hand to manipulate, it is understood as something fluid that can flood the cities, and as a thin object of a certain shape, which can pierce something soft, like the Muslim faith or Islam. It is obvious that the cryptotype portrait of the name “terror” is almost identical to the portrait of the word “terrorism”. There is an interdependence of the frequency of mentioning terrorism in the news and the index of emotional stability in the society: the more often terrorism is mentioned, the lower is the level of emotional stability, and the more often people feel anxiety and speak about it
