Abstract: The article describes the topical problem of multi-code in modern textual formations including not the only one but a considerable number of sets of language codes and sub-codes. It is possible to speak about muli-code when a textual formation includes not only the language elements, but also the elements from the other systems, having their own codes. The functions of multi-code are considered on the text material of the Soviet political war posters (1941—1945) created by the Soviet artists-cartoonists V. N. Denis and Kukryniksy. Their works represent the unity of the verbal and vis-ual information, which is due to communicative and cognitive priority of the sender and pronounced manipulative function. The Soviet government actively used multimodal texts in their purposes: to disseminate and to fix in human consciousness a negative image of Hitler with the help of cognitive metaphors and the use of visual Zoologica metaphors; using color and artistic litotes to simulate the images of «us» and «them», they positively and negatively labeled and presented a number of socially and conceptually meaningful oppositions «Soviet soldier ↔ fascist» , «Stalin ↔ Hitler», «red ↔ black», «life ↔ death», «good ↔ evil»
Key words: multimodal text; Soviet political poster; caricature; antinomy «friend or foe»; cognitive metaphor; Zoological; military metaphor; color; propaganda; ideology
