Abstract: This paper offers a general characterisation of the principal direction in which Russian has developed at the end of the XX century. It is proposed that this development can be seen as a twofold process, consisting firstly of a de-Sovietisation of the Russian language, that is the removal of those linguistic features that owed their existence to or were otherwise associated with the Soviet system, and secondly of a westernisation of Russian, that is the introduction (or perhaps in some cases revival) of linguistic features found in the languages of Western Europe
Key words: Russian language; Soviet language; democratic discourse; totalitarian discourse; westernisation
