Abstract: This paper briefly recalls some of the cognitive functions of metaphors used to sense the future. The focus here is on issues in Russian. The future is obviously a feature of our understanding of time. Faced with the complexities and challenges of the times, much effort has gone into the development of models and scenarios through which to comprehend the future of our country and to guide the navigation of policy-makers. The author argues that particular metaphors for configuring understanding of the future have both specific advantages and disadvantages.
