Abstract: The article analyzes metaphoricity from the point of view of the mechanism of manipulation of public opinion in the media of Russia, Ukraine, China and the United States in the context of the recognition of the independence of the LPR and the DPR by the Russian government, as well as the beginning of the military operation in these regions and its consequences. The article looks at the system of cognitive distortions and their manifestation within the framework of the semio-socio-psychological concept, strategies and tactics of political discourse. The urgency of the research is determined by the need to study the issue of interpretation taking into account the ideological and cognitive aspects, as well as the consideration of causal-consecutive relationships in the process of perception and interpretation of metaphors. The materials were taken from the addresses of the Russian President Vladimir Putin (February 21, 2022, etc.), Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, as well as articles in Chinese and English from the news sites Xinhua and The New York Times. The authors also consider the reaction of the public to these events in different countries, the manifestations of which are reflected in social networks. The study notes the influence of mass media on the opinion of the public which results in the fact that the information recipients follow the prevailing point of view, and that it becomes impossible for them to make an adequate assessment under this influence and to go back to the initially available information together with the confidence that the points of view of the recipients and senders of the message coincide. This enhances the process of stereotyping, that is, the division of society according to the criteria of “own” and “alien”, based on the speeches of political leaders
